Try Intermittent Fasting For Better Health

Physical health and financial health are tightly integrated in our lives. Paying attention to our physical health is paramount to living a successful life.

Intermittent fasting is the practice of periodically going without food for a longer-than-normal period of time. The typical goal is going 16 hours or more without food. The sweet spot is between 18-24 hours but this may take time to work up to.

Sound hard? Not really…let’s say you eat dinner at 6:00pm, then the goal is not to eat again (meaning no snacks, nothing!) until at least 10am then next morning (sleep counts toward fasting!). Feel free to drink water, coffee or tea (but avoid any cream or sugar).

Why does this habit promote health and longevity? Because it increases autophagy (your body’s garbage removal process), the cellular self-cleansing process that rids cells of bad molecules and organelles.

When we eat this garbage removal process essentially comes to a screeching halt. The body turns all its attention to digestion and nutrient absorption and shuts down autophagy.

By fasting intermittently, we can increase the autophagy process and clear out cellular junk!

Start by trying a 16 hour fast one or two days a week. As you get more comfortable with it perhaps go to every other day and/or expand the fasting period.

Also, eating a low-carbohydrate diet makes fasting easier since hunger generally won’t get out of hand. Fasting can promote fat loss too by decreasing insulin. Insulin inhibits the breakdown of fat.

This new healthy habit can all be done for FREE too! No gym memberships needed, equipment to buy, or classes to attend. Here’s to your health!
